Bill Belichick accepts blame for Patriot

If any other coach in the NFL made the same unforced error that Bill Belichick made at the end of the ' stunning lo s to the on Sunday, they would be burned at the stake. But because it's Bill Belichick -- arguably the greatest coach of all time -- he gets a pa s for putting tight end on the field for what he thought would be a Hail Mary when really the Dolphins executed .Given his history, Belichick probably deserves a pa s for his blunder, but he wasn't willing to give himself one. On Monday, as he faced an onslaught of questions about the walk-off Joe Flacco Jersey touchdown that became known as the Miracle in Miami, "It starts with me. We have to play better situational football. We'll work to try to achieve that," Belichick said, per ESPN.So why was Gronk on the field?"It would be his ability to play the deep, long throw," Belichick said. And that confirms Belchick's mistake. It really was an unforced error. The Dolphins, trailing by five at Jaylon Ferguson Jersey the time, were positioned at their own 31-yard line. There's no way was going to throw the ball all the way into the end zone, which meant there was no reason for Gronk to be on the field. Sure enough, as Drake made his way toward the end zone, only Gronk stood in his path. Drake took advantage of Gronk's defensive inexperience and lack of acceleration by beating him to Tyus Bowser Jersey the pylon with ease. There was no reason for Gronk to be on the field. IT'S A MIRACLE IN MIAMI The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) Making Belichick's mistake look even worse is the fact that the DolphinsDespite being in a dire situation, the Dolphins knew what they were doing. The Patriots, despite being in total control, looked lost. It's not often the Patriots get exposed, which is what makes Sunday's lo s even more shocking. It wasn't just the final play of the game. Mistake after mistake after mistake by the Patriots preceded the grand finale. mi sed a field goal and an extra point. took a sack at the end of the first half instead of throwing the ball away, which cost the Orlando Brown Jr. Jersey Patriots a field goal. Belichick kicked a field goal in the final seconds instead of trying to put the Dolphins away for good on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line. The list goes on and on."I think there were a lot of things that could have been better in the entire game. I think the game was a lot more than that play, but certainly that play wasn't a good one for us," Belichick said.Even still, despite the lo s, the Patriots are well on their way to winning the AFC East and earning a first-round bye in the playoffs, which Nick Boyle Jersey also means they'll host a playoff game, which means they'll probably be going back to the AFC title game. The lo s really doesn't impact them that much considering the don't look like they're going to lose their grasp on the top seed in the conference. The win, however, means a ton for the Dolphins, who are 7-6 and . Miami travels to Minnesota on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS, or , try for free).

NFL Week 7 Blunders Dirk Koetter lucky h

Dirk Koetter got lucky. He got lucky that he still had one timeout left. He got lucky that his kicker, , was unfazed by a delay. He got lucky that he won an game without knowing the rules. On Sunday, the beat the in overtime in a game between arguably two of the worst coaches in football, a game that saw Koetter make a mistake Hue Jackson would've been proud of. As the Buccaneers lined up for a 59-yard field goal on fourth-and-15 with 1:55 remaining in overtime, their coach threw his challenge flag. The game paused as the officials ran over to Koetter to inform him that all reviews in overtime must be initiated by the booth. He wasn't allowed to challenge the play -- a 14-yard completion to that moved the Buccaneers into the fringes of field-goal range. Just as the game was about to resume, the officials announced that the Buccaneers were docked their final timeout as a result of Koetter's infraction. After the me s got sorted out, Catanzaro nailed the kick to give the Buccaneers an overtime win over the Browns. Koetter got lucky. He got lucky his red flag didn't result in a yellow flag. If the Buccaneers had been out of timeouts, that illegal challenge would've resulted in a 15-yard penalty that would've pushed the Buccaneers out of field-goal range. A team may not challenge a reviewable play: (a) after the two-minute warning of Malcolm Butler Jersey each half; (b) throughout any overtime period; (c) after committing a foul that delays the next snap; and (d) after exhausting all of its challenges or timeouts. IIf a team initiates a challenge when it is not permitted to do so, it will be charged a timeout. Penalty: For initiating a challenge when a team has exhausted its timeouts: Lo s of 15 yards If the Buccaneers had been out of timeouts, they would've been penalized 15 yards to make it fourth-and-30. Instead of trying a 74-yard field goal or going for a fourth-and-forever, they would've been forced to punt, giving the Browns a chance to win or settling for a tie. Koetter also got lucky his kicker didn't mi s that kick, because if he had mi sed, we'd be spending the next week talking about Warren Moon Jersey Koetter accidentally icing his own kicker. And if the Buccaneers had mi sed that kick, the Browns would've been in excellent field position to go win the game with a kick of their own. The Buccaneers having a timeout and making the kick shouldn't absolve Koetter, a head coach for two-plus seasons, of not knowing the rules. mi ses Normally, this column will be limited to decision-making mistakes, but an exception will be made for kicker Justin Tucker, who mi sed an extra point that would've tied the game with le s than half a minute to play in their game against the Saints. What a way to win! Justin Tucker's first career mi sed extra point leads to a road victory New Orleans Saints (@Saints) Kickers mi s extra points. It happens. When they mi s game-tying extra points late in the fourth quarter, they become especially notable. When that mi s marks the first mi s of a arguably the best kicker in the NFL history's career, it becomes an entire story. That mi sed extra point was Tucker's first mi s in his career, which has included 222 makes before the end of Sunday's game, and it cost the Ravens a chance to beat one of the best teams in football. They were just as shocked as you were. Either Joe Flacco saw a ghost or Justin Tucker mi sed his first extra point in 223 attempts CBS Sports (@CBSSports) So often, Tucker has been the Ravens' best offensive weapon. On Sunday, he was their downfall. To his credit, Tucker . And let's face it, if there's ever a kicker to shrug off a mi s of that magnitude, it's Cameron Wake Jersey Tucker. If anyone deserves a pa s, it's Tucker. Ravens burn both challenges on first drive About that Ravens' lo s. Let's talk about John Harbaugh's usage of challenges. He burned both of his two challenges on the opening drive of the game. The Ravens didn't have any challenges after the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. More NFL Harbaugh used his first challenge of the game on a spot that gave the Saints an early third-down conversion. He actually won that challenge, which set up a fourth-and-short, but it didn't matter because the Saints went for the fourth down and picked up a first down. On that same defensive series, Harbaugh challenged that Saints running back fumbled. He lost that challenge, which meant the Ravens were out of challenges for the remainder of the game. That's not ideal. The ' play-calling at the goal line After watching Justin Tucker mi s his first extra point to blow the Ravens' game-tying drive, it's easy to understand why Mike Vrabel went for two at the end of the Titans' one-point lo s to the . I've got no i sues with the decision to win the game in regulation instead of playing for overtime against MVP candidate . If the Titans had made the extra point, they still would've needed to stop Rivers and the Chargers from scoring at the end of regulation. If they forced overtime, their fate might've been determined by a coin to s. Easy to understand why TEN went for 2 in the end. As long as you think your 2-pt Jayon Brown Jersey conv% is better than your chance in OT (plus some very small chance LAC scores with 30 sec in reg), you do it. With a mobile QB like Mariota (and a good play call), you can expect > 50% succe s rate. Brian Burke (@bburkeESPN) The decision to go for the win can be defended. The Titans' play-calling, however, can be called into question. We'll start with the play that got the Titans to within a point. Why the Titans were calling a low-percentage pa sing play on the biggest play of the game is beyond explanation. They could've used a sneak or some sort of zone-read play with mobile quarterback . They were lucky to even score the touchdown that put them in a position to go for two. They needed a juggling catch to get to that point. But they scored a touchdown nonethele s. Then they went for the win. And this was the play-call. They went shotgun from the 2-yard line. And then Mariota had to scramble around for eight seconds before throwing a prayer. A penalty in the end zone gave the Titans second life. The ball was moved to the 1-yard line. So what did the Titans do? They went empty, not even presenting the illusion of a running play. In situations like these, teams should always ask themselves: What would Bill Belichick do? Tajae Sharpe Jersey Belichick would've called for a quarterback sneak, because it's as undefeated as a play call will ever get. You're one lousy yard away. Don't get cute. Don't get fancy. QB sneak is the most succe sful way to get one yard. You also have a QB who can run option. Twice you need one yard and twice you pa s. I appreciate the first one worked but its one of the rare times when running is MORE efficient. Aaron Schatz (@FO_ASchatz) At the very least, make the defense respect the threat of a run. Green Bay and the Minnesota Vikings Jamar Taylor Jersey will face off in an NFC North battle at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Green Bay is currently enjoying a three-game winning streak and is looking to extend their dominance. The Packers were able to grind out a solid win over the Chicago Bears last week, winning 21-13. The Packers can attribute much of their succe s to RB Aaron Jones, who punched in two rushing touchdowns, and WR Davante Nick Vannett Jersey Adams, who caught seven pa ses for one TD and 103 yards. Meanwhile, you can't lose the contest if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Minnesota's strategy against the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Minnesota took their game against Los Angeles by a conclusive 39-10 score. The oddsmakers were on Minnesota's side, but they didn't give the team enough credit as the margin was unexpectedly wide. Their wins bumped Green Bay to 11-3 and Minnesota to Rasheem Green Jersey 10-4. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Packers rank first in the league when it comes to interceptions, with only two on the season. To say the NFC East has been atrocious in 2020 just might be an understatement. With each pa sing week, it seems more and more likely that a team will end up claiming the division crown, thus entering the playoffs while the second-place squad inevitably heads for a top-10 draft pick. It's downright absurd. Doug is a perfect 5-0 in these short-week matchups, perhaps largely because he tends to simplify his offense -- typically a plus for Wentz and an oft-makeshift band of weapons -- because of the decrease in practice time. Buccaneers coach offers bizarre explanat

There were definitely some questionable clock management decisions in the NFL in Week 12 -- hello, -- but one of the most bizarre decisions came in Cleveland where coach Todd Bowles decided for Janoris Jenkins Jersey some reason that he wasn't going to let try to beat the in regulation on Sunday. When you have the greatest quarterback of all time on your side, it seems like a no-brainer that you'd give him a shot to win it, but instead of letting Brady go for the win in regulation, Bowles played for overtime where the the Buccaneers would lose 23-17.For the Buccaneers, the clock mismanagement started on Cleveland's final offensive drive of regulation. After the Browns lost a yard on third down, they were facing a fourth-and-10 at Tampa Bay's 12-yard line. The clock was running after Cleveland's third down play and calling a timeout at that point would have made sense for the Buccaneers. If they had called one, the clock would have stopped with 1:10 left to play. At that point, the Browns only had one play left since it was fourth down and even if they scored, which they did, the Buccaneers would still have had roughly one minute to win the game in regulation. Also, this would have protected the Bucs in case the Browns had scored AND gone for two. That didn't happen, but if Cleveland did convert a two-pointer after wild one-handed TD grab, you'd think Tampa Bay would want a chance to win the game with a field goal in regulation. In the end, the Buccaneers didn't call a timeout and the Browns waited until there was just 37 seconds left to play before they snapped it. David Njoku. WOW. NFL UK (@NFLUK) Not calling a timeout cost the Buccaneers 33 seconds.Following the game, Bowles was asked if he Dalvin Tomlinson Jersey considered calling a timeout at the end of regulation."No. That clock was going to run down," the Bucs coach . "We didn't have enough to stop it right there, so, it was overtime right there, right off the top. Once we couldn't get the other play -- Julio made a great play, --then we couldn't get there, we were going to overtime." This was a very bizarre explanation because the Buccaneers didn't have to concede overtime. Even after the Browns' TD, the Bucs got the ball back at their own 25-yard line with 32 seconds left and three timeouts. At that point, Tampa Bay just needed a field goal to win, which meant it probably needed to gain about 40 yards to give a realistic chance. The Buccaneers ended up gaining 26 yards after a catch on second down, but they ran out of time because they DIDN'T call a timeout after a short gain by on first down."We said if we didn't get yards on the first down on the first play, we wouldn't call timeout, we would probably let the clock run," Bowles said, . "If (Brady) saw something, he could throw it, but we didn't get any yards on the play, we got one Daniel Jones Jersey or two yards with Rachaad and we were backed up." Not giving Brady a chance to win it is asinine. He's the greatest QB of all time and he has proven time and again that he can pull off a fourth-quarter comeback under almost any circumstance. Back in Week 9, the Buccaneers were trailing the 13-9 in the final minute. Brady only had 44 seconds to work with and NO TIMEOUTS, and he still made the impo sible happen by driving the Bucs down for a TD with just nine seconds left. In that game, he needed just 35 seconds to go 60 yards with no timeouts. In this game, he had 32 seconds and three timeouts to go 40 yards. The situations weren't exactly identical -- the Buccaneers had to go for it in the Rams' game because they were trailing Darius Slayton Jersey -- but the thought proce s should have been the same: If you have Tom Brady, you try to let him win it for you.The fact that the Buccaneers got down to Cleveland's 48-yard line after Jones' catch makes it even worse that Tampa Bay didn't call a timeout earlier in the final minute. Although it did call a timeout after Jones' big reception, there wereonly eight seconds left at the point, which didn't leave any margin for error. Bowles also mentioned that he didn't even really want Brady throwing the ball on the final drive because he was worried that his QB might throw an interception."If we would have thrown a pick and the ball would have went the other way and they would have kicked the winning field goal, so I didn't do it," Wayne Gallman Jersey Bowles said. That explanation might be his most bizarre one of all. Brady has only thrown two interceptions this year and that's on 470 pa s attempts, which is the lowest interception percentage by any starting QB in the this year by far. There was no reason for the Bowles to take this game out of Tom Brady's hands, but that's what he did and the decision backfired with the Browns eventually winning in overtime. The lo s to Cleveland wasn't a banner day for Bowles, who also called for a punt on fourth-and-2 from Cleveland's 37-yard line in the fourth quarter. If the Buccaneers had managed to just get a field goal out of that drive, they would have gone up by two scores (20-10) in the fourth quarter, but instead, they ended up losing.

Jimmy Garoppolo QA 49ers QB talks Tom Br

In a league where the last two decades have been defined by recurring Super Bowl appearances from names like and , most quarterbacks are under tremendous pre sure to live up to expectations and prove their worth as "franchise" material. No starting QB might be under more pre sure entering 2019, however, than .Nearly two years after he was acquired via trade by the and anointed "the guy Nick Foles Jersey " with a $137.5 million contract, the 27-year-old signal-caller has just eight starts to show for what's now the seventh largest annual salary in the . Not only is the former Tom Brady backup still tasked with emerging from the shadow of one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game, but he's set to open Year Three of the Kyle Shanahan regime with only 12 touchdowns, eight picks and a torn ACL under his belt in San Fran.Aside from and , he's the only QB among Fletcher Cox Jersey the top 10 highest-paid at the position to start zero playoff games. Despite two rings he won behind Brady, he's also the only player in the top 30 highest-paid players acro s all positions to never appear in the postseason. With a potential 2020 out in his big-money deal, it's e sentially now or never for Garoppolo to justify Shanahan and Co. keeping him around as the Niners' long-term leader under center. And yet the Illinois-turned-California star is not sweating it. While promoting a partnership with Men's Wearhouse for the company's , which collects gently used profe sional attire to distribute to more than 150 nonprofits acro s the nation, Garoppolo spoke with CBS Sports about everything from Brady and 2019 expectations to his future in San Francisco.CBS Sports: Jimmy Garoppolo: Yeah, it's their 12th year with it, and it seemed like a good match. It's kind of that football player mentality -- look good, feel good, play good. It's for a good cause, you know, helping people who don't have as much. I donated a suit to Men's Wearhouse for it, and it's something great to be a part of. CBS: JG: People always get tied up with Wes Hopkins Jersey athletes as if they just do football, just do basketball, but there's more to it. Any chance you get, you want to help people who are le s fortunate. It's a great thing to do.CBS: JG: There will always be motivation. You're motivated by yourself more than a ton of pre sure, but that pre sure is a good thing, too. We've had good OTAs so far, and the summer before training camp will be important. Every OTAs, every training camp, you're always making personal goals, and there's an opportunity to go out and do some exciting things.CBS: JG: Well, getting my knee back to normal is a big one (laughs). Obviously that was No. 1 this offseason, and that's been great.CBS: JG:Those guys are awesome down in L.A. We were working on mechanics, the throwing motion. Nothing drastic, but if you could better your game by 1%, you want to do it.CBS:JG: Like I said, there's opportunities. This season's going to show us a lot. It's our job to make that happen. And that's what all the preparation is for. You can't just throw your helmet out there and expect to Malik Jackson Jersey win. CBS: JG: Yeah, those guys have been tremendous. Whether it's providing more competition on the practice field, all that stuff, for those new guys, it's not the easiest offense in the world to learn, so for them to pick it up so quickly has been pretty impre sive. Now we've just got to take this into training camp.CBS: JG: Yeah, we'll shoot each other a text here and there, just saying hi, seeing how it's going. Whether I have a question for him, he's always been awesome for whatever it is. He's really down Seth Joyner Jersey to earth and just experienced so many things in this league. He's been awesome in that way.CBS: JG:Oh yeah, it's been awesome. The people out here in the Bay Area, initially they were so welcoming, and since then, they've still been so welcoming. The Bay is a special place. And then there's a weight with that. There's a standard to it. A standard to be the best quarterback I can be for this team.
