The training workshops for Category 5 were held from 21st to 25th February. Altogether 13 women, and 15 men from village Pilari 1 participated.

 

Due to the complexity of the craft, the trainings had to be done with a lot of care. The group consisted largely of women who had never even stepped foot out of their houses. The focal person informed that he had been persuaded due to the efforts of Project Manager Naheem Shah to encourage womenfolk to learn the craft of kashi. They were most fascinated by the TV as the modules developed for various steps were shown to them.

Village Ghulam Allah 2

 

The training workshops for Category 4 were held from 16-20th February. Altogether 23 young men from village Ghulam Allah 2 participated.

 

The workshops had been organized in order to familiarize the group with various aspects of manufacturing bamboo products. As in the case of other trainings, among the most important task was to provide them with background information beginning from ensuing the use of bamboo of good quality to methods for cutting and assembling various parts of a product.

The trainers were Baba Ismail (hailing from Mansehra) and Mian Dad (from Tando Allahyar), both highly skilled artisans, who had been engaged in making bamboo products for the last several years on various HF projects.

Village Allah Deeno 1 or Chulah jo Goth and Village Pilari 2 or Qudriti Goth

 

The second and third training workshops for Category 2 regarding Chulah Making and Category 3 for Mother Earth Products were conducted between 10th -14th February 2019 at ZC3, Makli. Altogether 14 from village Allah Deeno 1 participated comprising 8 women and 7 youth, while 17 participants from village Pilari 2 comprising 6 women, 7 youth and 3 people with disabilities.

 

Although the cold wave seemed to be persisting; however, the weather was slightly more amenable and the participants took part with great enthusiasm in the process.

 

The most inspiring talk was give be the award winner Champa who told her story regarding her struggle to help build the chulahs. She told the audience that she was exactly in the same condition as the participants themselves. But through her sustained efforts and along with her husband Kanji she was able to help build thousands of chulahs taught to her by Heritage Foundation. She explained that she now was a woman of extraordinary means which she demonstrated by flashing her silver jewellery and by relating the wealth that she has acquired. As she has earned over Rs. 5,000,000 she had a right to show the potential of working hard in furthering a cause, which can also help others to achieve a better quality of life.

Barefoot Training Workshop for Category 1: Construction Techniques

Village Allah Deeno 2 or Sutho jo Goth

The first training workshop for Category 1 regarding Construction Techniques was conducted between 5-9th February 2019 at ZC3, Makli. Altogether 38 participants from village Allah Deeno 2 participated comprising 25 women, 13 youth and 10 people with disabilities. Some women brought their babies with them along with several children who could not be left at home. They were all accommodated, since this is the only way we can encourage women to participate in learning activities.

Training of Trainers

On 30th -31st January, at ZC3. Altogether 14 master trainers attended the workshop. The MTs, who had been trained over several years by HF, belonged to villages in Mirpur Khas, TandoAllahyar and Makli itself.

The trainers for the workshop were Ar. Yasmeen Lari and Mr. Naheem Shah who were assisted by supervisors Ms. Moomal Memon, Mr. Ali Brohi, Mr. Munawwar and Mr. Abdul Haque.

Bringing Back the Glory of Karachi

In pursuance to the Hon’ble Supreme Court orders to reclaim the glory of the city of Karachi and to regulate further development, a meeting was held by Chief Secretary, Government of Sindh at Sindh Secretariat on Thursday, 31st January, 2019. The meeting was attended by several eminent architects and urban planners as well as top government officials for a full day session of discussions for working out a way forward.

Ar. Yasmeen Lari, as CEO, Heritage Foundation of Pakistan made a presentation on the vision for Karachi: “A 21st century megacity steeped in its 19thc. historic past, incorporating low carbon, climate smart, people-friendly, walkable green urbanism.”

Makli Livelihoods Initiative

Makli Livelihoods Initiative

On 27th January 2018, at ZC3, the first assembly under the Makli Livelihoods Initiative (a collaborative effort of British Council/Heritage Foundation of Pakistan/and Glasgow University was held.

Also, Mr. Rizwan, head of Dewa Academy for the disabled examined several of the villagers who were suffering from various disabilities. It was decided that a survey of children with disabilities should be carried. There may be a need to work out how to help all those including children in order to mitigate their suffering.

Heritage Foundation of Pakistan Karachi Centre and ZC3 at Makli were honoured by visits of Ms. Nao Hayashi (UNESCO Program Officer, Paris World Heritage Centre) and Dr. Jonathan Bell (ICOMOS consultant) and Mr. Jawad Aziz, Culture Specialist UNESCO Islamabad) who were on a mission to evaluate the status of the condition of Makli World Heritage Site.

The World Habitat Awards, established in 1985 are the world’s leading housing awards. They are organised by World Habitat with support from UN-Habitat.

Pakistan Chulahs – _The smokeless stoves empowering women and changing lives teaches marginalized women to build a hygienic, sustainable, smokeless earthen stove, which not only improves their health but also empowers them to earn a living by marketing and building stoves in other villages.

Celebrations of the birthday of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on 25th December 2018.

The festive event was organized by Sindh Police, and attended by high police officials including DIG and SSPs from Hyderabad and Thatta. On the occasion several schools had been invited to present skits and performances which were also attended by the local young people.

It was amazing how the venue consisting of a large hangar like structure made of skillful bamboo construction is becoming a popular venue for various groups.
